Testimonials

I've been playing in bands for 30 years, and still gig regularly with a soul/rock/orginals band, a western swing band, and a variety of other projects. I like simple, low tech rigs and organic guitar sounds (Clapton with the Bluesbreakers, Duke Levine, Gurf Morlix, Albert King, Kenny Burrell). This pedal [Super 250] is right up my alley!

Formula 69

The Formula 69 is a recreation of the classic late 60's, early 70's silicon Fuzz Face with a few tweaks and mods to improve tone and versatility.

Germanium fuzz faces are very temperamental as they react differently depending on the ambient temperature, guitar, amp, other effects in the chain, and of course, bias setting is very important. Silicon Fuzz Faces are more reliable and consistent however they have a reputation of being harsh and too high gain.

In order to address these issues, the first change was to fit the circuit with low gain, selected silicon transistors. This adds warmth to the tone yet keeps the pedal hot enough to cut through the mix. At the same time, these transistors are much more stable than their germanium counterparts as the weather and ambient temperature will not affect performance. Also, with these lower gain transitors, there are no significant issues with oscillation or radio waves. As such, the Formula 69 offers the best of both worlds...warm, soulful tone with enough amp sizzling gain in a compact, consistent and reliable package.

Furthermore, the tone switch completely changes the pedal's voice as it allows the user to select a full and thick fuzz or to reduce the bottom end to really stand out! The external Bias control drastically changes the effect's Mid content and response. Finally, no Solid Gold pedal is complete without a filtered 2.1mm DC input, true bypass switching and a super bright 5mm LED!
